2 Cases of the Synovial Sarcoma Arising from the Knee Joint

Abstract
Synovial sarcoma is encountered in the synovial membranes of joints, serous bursae and tendon sheaths. These tumors occur most frequently about the knee joint. Microscopically, these tumors have very characteristic findings. Clinically they have a great Tndency for recurrence. Radiotherapy would seen to be the first choice in treatment but it is palliative rather than curative. The term synovioma was first suggested by L. M. Smith. About 10 other names have been applied to this group of tumors. The author¢¥s two cases encountered during past 5 years were treated by wide excision at P. N. U. H.
Both cases were treated with total resection by the local surgeons under the diagnosis of malignant tumors, unclassified, but referred to us due to recurrense.
Author wishes to contribute, if any, and be corrected for the question of the therapy.
One of the two cases is 58 years old than, the other is 42 years old house wife. Both patients were admitted to our hospital with the chief complaint of swelling and pain of the left knee joint.
On the former case, three years prior to admission, he had removal of tumor mass of about IQ cm. in diameter, from his left knee. The swelling was first noted one year prior to admission.
The tumor are usually graish white in cross section.
On the latter case, the tumor was child head or adult fist size. The both tumors were po>ly delimited fro m the surrounding tissa and pink in cross section.
Microscopically, these tumors are typical synovial sarcoma- For the treatment, the quadriceps femoris muscle tendons including a lateral part of synovium were resected by use of the S form incision in the knee joint area for removal of the tumor mass for the first case, and for the other cases more wide local excision including epiph?ysial cartilage of bones were done and then primary suture was performed.
After about 2 weeks, both patients were discharged in complete heal and we recommened to deep x-ray therapy for further procedure.
